IC2 Selected for 2 NASA SBIR Contracts to Advance Microphone Technology

IC2 announced today that NASA has selected the company for two new Phase 1 awards from the 2019 SBIR program, both focused on advancing microphone-related technologies for aeroacoustic measurements. 


The first project initiates the development of an ultra-low-profile, instrumentation-grade microphone for in-flight aeroacoustics measurements. Designed to be mounted on the exterior of an aircraft, the microphone combines microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) piezoelectric sensing with backside electrical contacts and advanced packaging technology. The goal of this research is to develop a microphone that meets the demanding in-flight performance requirements for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic applications while leveraging MEMS batch fabrication technology to reduce size and significantly reduce cost per channel.This work is aimed at fulfilling the aerospace industry’s need for economically viable sensing technology that meets required metrics for flight testing.  More details on this award can be found on the NASA SBIR Site.

The second project focuses on developing large-scale data acquisition systems for microphone phased arrays that are applicable in noise-source localization or beamforming measurements.  Together, both projects allow for continued progress in acoustic and microphone technologies, building upon advances made in previous SBIR contracts and broadening the portfolio of upcoming instrumentation-grade acoustic products.
